Payam Nahid

Dr. Payam Nahid, MD, MPH, is Professor of Medicine in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Executive Director of the UCSF Institute for Global Health Sciences and a globally recognized leader in TB and TB/HIV research. Dr. Nahid has spent more than two decades leading patient-centered clinical trials, translational research, and global collaborations to improve TB diagnosis, treatment, and care. He served as clinical trial protocol co-chair of TB Trials Consortium Study 31/AIDS Clinical Trials Group A5349, the landmark 13-country trial that demonstrated the noninferior efficacy of a four-month rifapentine–moxifloxacin regimen for drug-susceptible pulmonary TB. The regimen has since been recommended by the World Health Organization and U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. 

Dr. Nahid is the founding director of the UCSF Center for Tuberculosis and principal investigator of the NIAID-funded UCSF–UC Berkeley Tuberculosis Research Advancement Center, which supports and mentors early-stage TB investigators. He serves as Senior Research Advisor for the U.S. State Department-funded AFGHS-JHU SMART4TB Consortium. Dr. Nahid has chaired major U.S. and international TB guideline efforts, served on the WHO Strategic and Technical Advisory Group for TB, and continues to advance equitable global partnerships, mentorship, and evidence-based TB policy. Dr. Nahid serves as the contact Principal Investigator and is responsible for program aims and overall coordination of the program.
